• How is the AWA section scored?

Each essay receives a score from at least one trained reader, using a six-point scale, on the basis of the overall quality of an essay in response to the assigned task. The essay score is then reviewed by e-rater, a computerized program developed by ETS, which is being used to monitor the human reader. If the e-rater evaluation and the human score agree, the human score is used as the final score. If they disagree by a certain amount, a second human score is obtained, and the final score is the average of the two human scores.

The final scores on the two essays are then averaged and rounded up to the nearest half-point interval. A single score is reported for the Analytical Writing section.

• What is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT)?

In a computer adaptive test (CAT) like GMAT, questions are not pre-determined and are selected as you take the exam.

At the start of each multiple-choice section of the GMAT exam, you are presented with a question of medium difficulty. A correct response will direct test-takers to a question of increased difficulty. When you enter incorrect responses, the computer will present questions of lesser difficulty. As a result, you will get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you.

Different test takers will be given different questions-the GMAT exam adjusts to your individual ability level.

The CAT does not allow one to move ahead and check subsequent questions or go back to a question already answered. The total duration of the test including the optional breaks is approximately 4 hours.

• When should I take the GMAT?

GMAT test dates are available every month at various centers all over the world. However, since the test scores are valid for five years it is best to give the test in the second last year of your graduation, or during a period when it is most feasible to put in at least two to three months of intense preparation.

The SAT is held five times a year and students can give the test more then once but it is recommended that they take test two to three times only.

• Which scores will universities accept if the test is given more than once?

Different universities have different policies in this matter. Some may accept only the most recent scores and some may accept the best out of all the scores, some may even take the best sectional scores of all.

• What is the SAT subject test?

The SAT Subject test examines a student's proficiency in a particular subject matter. This test is usually given by students to who are applying for a specialized field of study in college such as engineering, English literature, history, international relation etc.

Subject test is recommended for students applying to Ivy league schools and top 15 to 20 universities in US.

• The SAT Subject Tests can be taken up to three times on a single test date.

• Calculators may be used only on the Mathematics Level 1 and Level 2 Subject Tests.

• SAT Subject Tests and the SAT General test cannot be taken on the same test date.

• The particular Subject Tests a student plans to take must be mentioned at the time of registration. This can be changed on test day if needed.

The dates and registration process is separate from the general test which can be found on ww.w.collegeboard.com. The fee for each Subject test is 20$. For tests that require language and listening an additional 20$ is charged and for all other subject tests an additional 9$ is charged.

Many colleges use the SAT Subject Tests for admission, for course placement, and to advise students about course selection. Some colleges specify the SAT Subject Tests that they require for admission or placement; others allow applicants to choose which tests to take.

• What is PSAT/NMSQT?

NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) and the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) are paper based tests that have questions similar to the General SAT and it allows students to preview the kind of experience they might encounter in the actual SAT. It also allows students to compete for scholarships provided by the NMSC (National Merit Scholarship Corporation) for college study. PSAT scores provide a good idea about how much a student can expect in the actual SAT.

The PSAT/NMSQT are not available for testing in India.

• If I have given the test more than once, which scores will go to the universities?

In case a student has given the test more than once, there are various ways in which a score can be accepted. Some universities accept only the most recent scores. Others will accept the best scores out of all, the average of the test scores, or the best scores of each section from each test. FYI, the critical reading in verbal and quantitative sections are considered more important, especially for engineering applicants.

• Can I prepare for TOEFL on my own?

Students with average proficiency in English communication (with a 65-70& in School level English) will get a 75-80 on the TOEFL. A mock test will evaluate the exact results. If the student requires 95 to 100 (which most universities demand) classes are essential to learn how to tackle the specific requirements of this test.

• How is TOEFL different from IELTS? Which is harder? Is IELTS prep enough to give TOEFL?

TOEFL is considered by most test takers to be of a higher level than IELTS. However, both tests evaluate the same set of skills. So if someone has given IELTS already they have a fair idea of what TOEFL will present. But the level of difficulty of questions, time management, questions types and standard of an ideal response is higher than that of IELTS. These are examples of areas dealt with in classes.
