What is the ideal time to start my application process?

The admission process for any overseas university/ institution is lengthy.
For UK, ideally one should start the application process at least 3-4 months prior to the intake date.

For Australia, one should send the applications at least 6 months prior to the intake date.
If one starts the process of shortlisting and applying to universities early, it would benefit the student interested. It betters the chances of receiving admission as well as get priority for accommodation, bursaries and scholarships.

Is IELTS a mandatory prerequisite for an admission in UK?

IELTS is not mandatory for every University / Institute. It depends on the University / Institute you have applied to. For those students, whose first language is not, they must provide evidence of logistic ability by gaining an IELTS or TOEFL.

Is TOEFL accepted by Australian Universities/Institutions?

Yes it is but TOEFL is not accepted by the Australian High Commission. They only accept IELTS.

How important is it that I pay a deposit?

It is important that you pay a deposit. Most Universities/Institutions require the students to pay part of the tuition fees in advance in order to reserve a place for them in the university. At "The Chopras", we highly recommend that all students make a deposit payment as it helps in making the visa process easier.

What am I likely to earn if I take a part-time job while at University?

As a student visa holder in the UK, you are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week during term time and 40 hours a week during holidays. You can earn £ 4 and above per hour depending on the kind of job and location. This can cover a small percentage of your expenses. However, while applying for your visa, you must show evidence of full financial support from other sources to cover university/institution tuition and living costs. Students are always advised not to depend on part time jobs for their living expenses.

What is the average time taken for visa processing for Australia ?

10-12 weeks.

An Australian Masters Program can be 1year, 1.5 years and/or 2 years long.

As per the new visa rules you must show living expenses for the first year of your course. The amount of which depends on where the university/institution you have chosen to attend is located. What are the prerequisite to get an admission in USA?

For a Masters: completions of 16 yrs of education, TOEFL, GRE/GMAT are prerequisite.  Very handful of universities offers programs for those students who have completed 15 years of education, subject to certain conditions.

But for the univs offering 15 years education the visa could anytime be an issue.
For Pursuing Bachelors: You should have completed Class 12, TOEFL and SAT.

What are the documents required for admission?

For Masters: Transcript, LOR, SOP, RESUME (for MBA) Reporting of scores ie TOEFL and GRE/GMAT officially, financial forms.

Additional inputs like Presentations, Projects, Publications help specially in getting scholarships.

What are the factors that are considered in short listing the Universities?

At "The Chopras", short listing of the Universities is a personalized process.  We take into consideration the student interest, academic scores; Technical examination scores ie the prerequisites, and the complete profile of the student strength and weaknesses.  Hence we would recommend the student to visit our office in person for a detail counseling session for short listing of the Universities.  We are proud to say that we are successful in choosing the right choice of Universities for the student profile and 100% success in getting the admission.

We at Chopras value each application put forward by the student. As each application costs a minimum $50 USD which is hard earned money. Hence our endeavor is to maximize the admits and minimize the rejections. The profiling and shortlisting done is a very tedious and cumbersome process which involves senior experts who mix and match the student profile to about 25-30 univs (may vary case to case) and also go back 3-5 years down the years to check the acceptance graph of the univs to know how they have been evaluating he applications. Is ranking of the University should be a basic criteria in choosing the choices of Universities?

We suggest the student to use Ranking as one among the criteria but not as a whole.  It is understood that the Ranking are done by some Private bodies by using  certain parameters which most of them are not applicable from the student perspective.  We recommend student to consider other important factors like accreditation of the University, courses, strength of the faculty, infrastructure, on-going researches and the placement support at the University.

More important student should look at his specialization and course and see if his choice of Univ is good for the same. Also some univs do not get into the ranking race.

Explain about the USA education system?

USA education follows credit based system. Credit hours are the number of hours of instruction that are scheduled per week. At the undergraduate level you are required 4 years of study and minimum number of credit hours, which usually varies from 120 to 130. And at Graduate level you are required 2 years of study and minimum number of credit hours, which usually varies from 30-36 credits. The tuition fee is based on the credit the students enroll with the Universities.

There is no Education Ministry in the States and each Institute/College/University can determine its own programs and admission standards. There are lots of private as well as state funded colleges.

Universities- are the ones which have many UG colleges and Institutes under them, like College of Business, College of Law etc. as well as any number of graduate and professional schools.

Four year colleges offering academic programs leading to a bachelor’s degree. Community colleges or junior colleges are undergraduate institutions offering first two years of academic instruction beyond secondary school at a relatively low cost. These offer certificate/diploma programs that last 6 months to a year. The first 2 years are also called as Associate degrees but majorly the visas are not that smooth for these colleges.

Institutes- Technological Institutes and Polytechnics offer programs in sciences and engineering. These are available in both PG and UG courses.

How does the semester system works in USA?

Fall Semester (August/September/October):
This is the main intake and almost all programs are available in this intake.  Also scholarship is available for this semester and as funds are allocated for the entire year during this session
Spring Semester (January/February/March:
This is the mid-year intake. There is limited aid available for this semester as most universities allocate funds in the Fall or September session.

Can you point some basic rules and facts for the USA STUDENT Visa formalities?

Visa is the official stamp on a persons passport permitting him to travel to that particular country. Visa provided is a privilege but not a right.  The criteria to give visas are based on a)Academic Qualifications b)Financial Capabilities and c)Ones intentions. If the consular officer is convinced about all three, only then he may grant you the visa. Generally the consulate officers are not biased on the Universities, but would like to know the reason for choosing that University for the your education. For student visa you must either be a permanent resident of the area governed by the consulate where you are applying or should have been a resident of that area at least for the past one year. Currently, the US embassy allows residents of certain consulate offices to apply at other designated consulates/embassy, if getting an appointment in the respective territory is a problem. However one is advised to cross verify on the same, as the rules are subject to change. What are the clauses under which USA visa will be refused?

The visa result after the interview will be either Grant or Refusal under clause 214(b). At times the USA Consulate will hold the visa for a security background check to complete the administrative procedure which is under clause 221(g) pink/Blue slip. If a student gets refusal under 214(b), he/she is eligible to go for the visa after 3 working days. Under 221(g) which is a hold of the visa for the administrative procedure, the student has to wait for the case to be completed – means there is no provision to re-file the visa till the case gets cleared. In this case the student is supposed to send the required documents mentioned in the Pink/Blue slip to the consular e mail address's docs are generally the Resume, SOP, Research interests, financial etc. The passport is also retained at the embassy. Once these docs go into the database they would further cross check. Generally the visa gets through in 10-30 days extra after receipt of the pink /Blue slip.

How are the chances for the MBBS student in getting their visas?  There is a usual market myth is that the chances for the clinical courses for the doctors are very very difficult.

To be very practical, as a KAPLAN sole provide for the USMLE, NDBE AND NCLEX, we are sending Doctors for the Clinical course to take USMLE clinical live lecture through student visa and to take the STEP 2 CS coach through B1/B2 visa and can vouch that visas are happening even to them.  As briefed before any students has to keep in mind that he is supposed to convince the visa officer on the intention of the trip and not for potential migration purpose.  We at "The Chopras" can provide the fullest support case-by-case in reviewing the file to give the right direction to the students.

What is the minimum high school GPA I need for scholarship consideration? What are the scholarship deadlines?

Any student with a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher is encouraged to apply for a USA scholarship .  All scholarship applications need to be in by the priority deadline of December 1 of your senior year in high school to be eligible for all scholarships.

What is Accreditation ad how is it beneficial.

Accreditation is a process cum technique by which universities and their courses are recognized for establishing a certain level of performance and quality. It is usually done by non-governmental agencies called accreditation bodies. There are two types of accreditation namely Regional and Professional.

Regional bodies check if the University or college as a complete entity meet certain standards of educational quality.

In addition, some professional accrediting bodies check and match the quality of education in specific fields like Business, Law, Medicine  etc.
